About Sainik School

About the Sainik School entrance exam

There are 33 Sainik Schools in India, fully residential schools run by the Sainik School Society under the Ministry of Defence. Admission is in Class 6 and Class 9 through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Exam, held once a year in January and conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The next exam is in January 2027.

Girls can apply to all 33 Sainik Schools in Class 6. Students who make the merit list are called for a medical test.

Boys and girls between 10 and 12 years of age can apply. The paper is objective and has four subjects: Maths (150 marks), English (50), GK (50) and Intelligence (50), a total of 300 marks in 150 minutes on a single day. A minimum of 40% is needed in each section.

Boys who are in class 7th or 8th and are between 13 and 15 years of age can apply. The objective paper adds Social Studies to make five subjects: Maths (200 marks), English, GK, Intelligence and Social Studies (50 each), a total of 400 marks in 180 minutes on a single day. A minimum of 40% is needed in each section.

UP Sainik Schools

UP Sainik School (Lucknow and Gorakhpur) is separate from the 33 schools above. It runs its own entrance exam, only for domicile students of Uttar Pradesh, and the next exam is on 20 December 2026. Admission is in Class 6 (boys only) and Class 9 (boys and girls).

The UP paper has three parts: Maths & Intelligence (100 marks), English (50) and GK (50), a total of 200 marks in 150 minutes, followed by an interview.

    One common form for all 33 Sainik Schools, conducted by the National Testing Agency. The application window is about one month in September and October.

  2. Nov / Dec

    Admit card

    Admit cards are downloaded online.

    Written exam

    An objective paper, conducted once a year in January. A minimum of 40% is needed in each section.

  4. Merit list and medical test

    Students who make the merit list are called for a medical test.
