There are 33 Sainik Schools in India, at present , broadly one in each state. These are fully residential premier institutions , administrated by Sainik School Society , Ministry of Defence.
These schools were established in 1960s , as the initiative of Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation’s first prime minister. These are English Medium Schools affiliated to CBSE. Admission to Sainik Schools is on the basis of an All India Written Exam and a medical test.
These schools have excelled in their primary role as a feeder institution to the Armed Forces and have over 15000 officers to her credit as officers in the Armed Forces. A large number of alumni are IAS, IPS officers, Doctors and Engineers serving all over the country and abroad.
It is to be noted that UP Sainik School , Lucknow ( also known as Captain Manoj Pandey Sainik School ) conducts its exam separately and is not a part of the above Sainik School Society.’
Recent Updates :
- Now girls can apply to all 33 Sainik Schools in India in class 6 , wef year 2020.
- NTA , the reputed government agency now conducts the admission test for Sainik Schools , wef year 2020.

All India Sainik School Exam conducted once a year, on first Sunday of January, for admission to class 6 and class 9 for its 31 schools. These exams are now conducted by National Testing Agency.
5 (Maths, English Language, GK, Intelligence & Social Studies)
Objective (answers have to be marked)
3 hours (180 minutes), Single day
All India Sainik School Exam conducted once a year, on first Sunday of January, for admission to class 6 and class 9 for its 31 schools. These exams are now conducted by National Testing Agency.

How to apply
It is an Online application process where the entire application form and the fee is submitted online. Admit cards are also downloaded online.

For Class 6 : Boys & Girls between 10 to 12 years of age, as on 31st March 2025. Born between 1st April 2013 to 31st March 2015.
For Class 9 : Boys who are in class 7th or 8th between 13 to 15 years of age, as on 31st March 2025. Born between 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2012.
